It is curious because these mathematical equations that they have in place are possibly the easiest thing about the game to fix because they are not design hurdles, but rather poor ratios and percentages that might be fixed in a patch. The biggest issue is gameplay balance during what you do most - fights. The biggest enemy in Darkest Dungeon is not the end boss, the unpredictable fights and traps along the way, or the growing list of mental problems besieging your heroes. Honestly, this man was nearly enough to keep the whole game going on his own.Įventually, though, the glaring problems arise, and they had me scratching my head as to why. It is exciting and easily the most unique aspect of this game. This constant audio companion (voiced by Wayne June) comments on your adventure at nearly every turn, whether in town to tell you a random tidbit of lore, or in battle to convey the sense of the turning of the tide. Immediately, the narrator steals the scene, reminding me of something akin to running commentary in Bastion. That is why I was so surprised only a couple hours in by how engrossing and complete this dark world felt. I also knew that being in early access development, some mechanics may be a little off or missing altogether. ![]() As an avid veteran of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls series, I came into this game literally prepared to die, but mostly aware of the challenges I would probably face. ![]() I recently picked up Darkest Dungeon because it appealed to my inner masochist and fascination with the whole medieval/gothic atmosphere thing.
